Starting April 25, 34th Avenue South will be closed between South 160th Street and South 162nd Street.

This closure is expected to last for five days and will extend outside of normal construction hours. Local access to residents living along that stretch of roadway will be maintained.

A detour will be in place for those who do not live on this stretch of roadway to route traffic around the closure (see map below).

In September, City Council approved to award and execute a construction contract for the 34th Avenue South project to RL Alia Company. Construction started earlier this year.

Project improvements along 34th Avenue South between South 160th Street and South 166th Street include the construction of sidewalk, planter strips, curb, gutter, pedestrian lighting, storm drainage facilities, pavement reconstruction, traffic calming, watermain replacement and undergrounding of overhead utilities. This project will include improvements along the north side of South 161st Street and along the north side of South 160th street.

Funding for the project includes City street funds (from parking taxes), a $2.0 million grant through the Washington State Transportation Improvement Board (TIB) and a $2.464 million Federal Highway (FHWA) grant through WSDOT’s Safe Routes to School Program.
